Rev. Tolton attended an annual\u00a0retreat at St. Viator College in Bourbonnais, IL just before his death.<\/p>\n<p>Looking in the July 1897 issue of the&#8221;The Viatorian&#8221; &#8211; the college newspaper &#8211; I found\u00a0this mention of the retreat:<a href=\"http:\/\/archives-news.viatorians.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/05\/scan_0002edit.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-641 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/archives-news.viatorians.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/05\/scan_0002edit-300x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archives-news.viatorians.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/05\/scan_0002edit-300x150.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archives-news.viatorians.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/05\/scan_0002edit-768x383.jpg 768w, https:\/\/archives-news.viatorians.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/05\/scan_0002edit.jpg 954w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>According to the biography, the heat at that time was\u00a0105 degrees.\u00a0After leaving the three-day retreat, he headed back to St. Monica&#8217;s, his parish in Chicago.\u00a0After stepping off the train, he walked toward the parish, but grew weak and collapsed on the sidewalk.\u00a0On the evening of July 9, 1897, he died in the hospital of heat stroke and uremia.\u00a0 Rev.\u00a0Tolton died at the age of 43, nearly 120 years ago.<\/p>\n<p>The Viatorian connection is minimal, the college wasn&#8217;t even in the book index.\u00a0But this connection is what led me to the book: I realized Tolton&#8217;s\u00a0life is what is important, not his death.\u00a0 This biography, of a man and his love of God, is an interesting story of persistence and faith.<\/p>\n<p>Joan<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>After reading a review about this book &#8220;From Slave to Priest: A Biography of the Reverend Augustine Tolton (1854-1897) &#8211; The First Black Priest of the United States,&#8221; I was surprised to learn of a connection with the Viatorians.
